Position Summary

The Department of Philosophy at the University of New Mexico is pleased to invite applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in Native American and Indigenous Philosophy at the rank of Assistant Professor. The anticipated start date is August 10, 2026. Customary undergraduate and graduate teaching duties, including thesis supervision, and non-teaching duties in Philosophy.

We are seeking an outstanding scholar with a research specialization in Native American and Indigenous Philosophy (with "Indigenous" here covering any and all indigenous communities and cultures in the Americas), who is able to teach courses that contribute to the Department's existing undergraduate curriculum, who is able both to teach courses that contribute to the Department's graduate curriculum as well as to provide mentoring and supervision for graduate students, who will enjoy working in a philosophically pluralistic department, and who has a demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university's mission to serve local and global communities.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications :

• Ph.D. in philosophy or related field by start date of appointment
• Native American and Indigenous Philosophy as an area of research specialization

Preferred Qualifications :

• Potential for producing a strong record of publications in Native American and Indigenous Philosophy
• Evidence of teaching excellence in courses taught in a university or college setting
• Ability to teach courses that contribute to the Department's existing undergraduate curriculum
• Ability to teach courses that contribute to the Department's graduate curriculum
• Ability to mentor and supervise the Department's graduate students
• Ability to work effectively with students and colleagues
• Ability to work effectively in a philosophically pluralistic department
• A demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university's mission to serve local and global communities.

• Please submit a writing sample, of journal article or book chapter length, providing evidence of potential or actual publishing ability in the field of Native American and Indigenous Philosophy.
• Please submit a one-page statement summarizing your perspectives on the place of Native American and Indigenous Philosophy both in the discipline of philosophy in general as well as in the UNM Department of Philosophy in particular.
• Under "Teaching Philosophy," please submit no more than 15 pages of evidence of teaching effectiveness, which might include peer and/or student evaluations of teaching as well as syllabi from recently taught and/or planned Philosophy courses.
• Please request that at least three confidential letters of reference be sent via e-mail to [email protected] , with the candidate's name appearing in the subject line.
