Summary/Objective:

The Academy History Researcher works on projects for the Credits Department and provides research support to other departments at the Academy when needed.

This position is represented by a union.

Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Assist in tracking current cinematic releases each week for use in Academy Award submission confirmations, including additional theatrical requirements for the Best Picture category.
  • Research accurate credits information using library and online resources for recent feature films not entered for Academy Award consideration. Enter credits information into the database for ongoing project.
  • Provide in-depth research and fact-checking materials related to the Academy and Academy Awards history for Academy staff.
  • Provide support for the Academy Awards and Academy Awards Acceptance Speech databases.
  • Assist in the compilation and archiving of relevant materials for the Academy Awards, including press releases, documents related to the eligibility of films and credited individuals, and documents related to Academy events.
  • In coordination with the Academy's Membership department, conduct research and prepare filmographies for potential new Academy members, containing up-to-date, accurate credit information for each candidate based on branch-determined guidelines.
  • Assist in verification and data entry of credits for feature films submitted for Academy Award consideration, including recording eligibility information, compiling notes regarding eligibility issues and questions, and preparing lists of eligible films and individuals.
  • In a support capacity, attend select meetings and work onsite for select events related to the awards processes.
  • In coordination with the Manager, Credits Department, may assist with special research and projects as needed.

Required Competencies:

  • College degree in English, Cinema Studies and/or Library Science.
  • Familiarity with online and print cinema reference sources.
  • Experience conducting thorough, accurate research.
  • Demonstrated notetaking and proofreading abilities.
  • Proven record of meeting deadlines and working collaboratively to complete projects.
  • Familiarity with Web-based data entry procedures and platforms such as Airtable, CRM and Sharepoint.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience working in a library or other arts environment is a plus. 1-2 years research experience also a plus.
  • Reading knowledge of one or more foreign languages helpful.
  • Expert knowledge of film history.

Physical Demands:

  • Bending, crouching, and remaining in a stationary position for extended periods may be required.
  • Moving boxes up to 20 lbs. may be required.

Compensation: The expected base salary for this role is $25.00 - $26.50 per hour. The actual base pay offered will be determined by factors such as experience, skills, training, location, certifications, education, and other factors permitted by law. Decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.)
